Pequot Lakes Police Reserve

The Pequot Lakes Police Reserve Unit was established in May of 2006 and since then has accomplished many tasks in a short amount of time.  Starting with only four members, the unit now has ten Reserve Officers.  The Reserve Unit is under the command of Reserve Captain Craig Friday, with the overall operation of the Unit overseen by Officer Kate Petersen.  The Reserve Officers receive training in a number of areas including Defensive Tactics, Handcuffing, Report Writing, Traffic Control and Radio Procedures just to name a few.

During the busy summer months the Reserve Unit are on duty Friday and Saturday nights assisting the Pequot Lakes Police Department throughout the Pequot Lakes and Jenkins communities.  Duties included are assisting the regular officers on traffic accidents, medicals, fire calls and other public requests for assistance.  The Unit is also responsible for performing security checks on area businesses as well as for out of town residents.  The Reserve Officers are encouraged to participate in bicycle and foot patrol duties during the day to assist the public with questions and concerns as well as interact with the local businesses and area residents.  The Reserve Unit also assists with traffic and crowd control during community events throughout the year.  During the winter months the Reserve Officers continue with their regular duties along with providing security at the Pequot Lakes High School sporting events, Christmas Ball and Prom.

The Pequot Lakes Reserve Unit has made a positive impact on the community in the short amount of time the program has been operational.  After a threat of violence towards the Pequot Lakes High School this last spring, School District Superintendent Rick Linnell requested that the Pequot Lakes Police Department provide additional security to the school.  The members of the Pequot Lakes Police Reserve Unit provided a Reserve Officer at the school everyday for the remainder of the school year.  This totaled 216 hours of volunteer time in one month alone in addition to their regularly scheduled night shifts.  The members of the Pequot Lakes Police Reserve Unit further demonstrated their commitment and dedication to making our community and school a safer place to live and work by performing this duty.

In July, the Pequot Lakes Police Department expanded its coverage area by 18 square miles when the residents of Jenkins Township approached the Police Department about providing police coverage for their area as well.  The residents stated that they wanted coverage of their community not only because of the excellent work that the regular officers perform, but also because of the Reserve Unit providing additional coverage, security checks and public assistance.

The Pequot Lakes Police Department is proud to nominate the Pequot Lakes Police Reserve Unit for the Minnesota Police Reserve Officers Association quarterly spotlight.  This Unit has made great strides in a short time.  Their duties and responsibilities will only continue to expand.
