Unit Spotlight
Maple Grove Police Reserve
+
The Maple Grove Police Reserve Unit began in the
early 1960's as a civil defense unit. As Maple
Grove was incorporated into a city from a village,
Chief of Police Robert Burlingame took over the
civil defense duties. Since the civil defense
unit's responsibilities reduced considerably,
Burlingame created the Police Reserve Unit around
1966.
+
Throughout the years, the duties include park
patrol, school events, weekend squad patrol,
assisting other suburbs with special activities,
and providing assistance both the Maple Grove
Police Officers or Community Service Officers.
+
Today, there are 18 reserve officers. The theme of
the reserve unit is not so much a Law
Enforcement Program, but is more of a
citizen's volunteer partnership for residents
who want to get to know the police officers better,
and provide the department in a support role.
Each new reserve is supplied a uniform and duty
belt items, and the department has ASP batons
available. The only out of pocket cost is for
handcuffs and shoe wear.
+
Initial training is provided by the Hennepin County
Reserve School for 10 weeks. After that a 2-3 day
in-house reserve academy is conducted, and
the reserve officer is then on a one year
probation. Additional training is conducted at each
monthly meetings and through ROTA. Training
includes certification in ASP baton, Pepper spray,
handcuffing, ice rescue, search and rescue, first
aid, and report writing.
+
The unit is overseen by Chief Mona Dohman, and
Sergeant Jeff Garland is her liaison. Garland has
been in charge of the reserves for 9 years.
Internally, the reserves are divided in three
teams, that are led by Captain Tom Stevenson,
and overseen by 3 Sergeants, Tim Wirtz, Brenda
Nosal and Mike Desens.
+
Maple Grove Police Chief Mona Dohman credits the
Reserve Unit with providing numerous hours of
volunteer time and was incredibly proud to
hear that they have been chosen as the MPROA's
spotlight unit of the month.
