Eden Prairie Police Reserve

The Eden Prairie Police Reserve Unit is an extension of the Eden Prairie Police Department and has been in existence for over 30 years. The Unit consists of 23 volunteers, who are trained to do whatever is necessary to assist the police department and the citizens of the city. The unit is supervised by three licensed officers, including a sergeant and two police officers. Within the reserve unit, we have a supervisor, deputy supervisor and four squad leaders.

The primary purpose of the reserve unit is to assist the department whenever needed. Often times, this can be on very short notice. All reserve officers carry alpha-numeric pagers and have access to portable radios. The police department can page anywhere from one to all reserves, depending on the need or situation. Page-outs can be for any number of reasons (day or night), including severe weather conditions, fire scene protection, lost/missing person searches, crime scene protection, serious traffic accidents, power outages or special details, as needed by the police department.

Eden Prairie Police Reserve Officers are responsible for the activation of the Mobile Command Center. This state-of-the-art vehicle responds to situations where officers might be on-scene for an extended period of time, or may need specialized communications. Several reserve officers train monthly on the deployment and operation of the Mobile Command Center.

Reserve Officers work regularly scheduled patrol shifts, generally taking place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or whenever necessary. During these shifts, reserve officers will handle various non-enforcement type calls, which enable licensed officers to handle the higher priority calls.

Reserve officers manage traffic control and general security at many special events. These events include the large Fourth of July celebration at Round Lake, Schooner Days, Eden Prairie High School football games, school carnivals and other events which may draw large numbers of people.

Eden Prairie Reserve Officers are also called upon to assist the police department with training exercises or mock disaster drills. These events sometimes involve playing “the bad guy” or other players at Emergency Response Team (ERU) training events.

These reserve officers will raise and lower the city flags at city hall, fire stations and other locations, when directed by state and/or local authority, and on specific holidays. * PICTURED - Reserve Officer Franklin
